Katie and Marshall both graduated from UC Santa Cruz, Katie with a degree in art, and Marshall with his degree in literature, so logically they opened a sock store.

No, it didn't happen just like that...after graduating Katie got a job as a sales person at the lovely Sock Shop and Shoe Co in Santa Cruz. There her love for socks and retail sales grew (she also developed an unbreakable shoe habit... "Thanks a lot guys!"). After a few years as a sales person she was introduced to the buying side of the sock business and that as they say is history!
With help from her parents who own a successful bed business (check out www.flobeds.com) Marshall and Katie wrote a business plan, and moved back to Katie's hometown Fort Bragg, CA to try and open a business.

Pippi's Longstockings opened its doors in the spring of 2006.

"We always dreamed of being business owners, we always had some wild idea, until one day it hit us, why not stick with what we know and love...Socks!
Some people thought we were nuts (some still do) but we knew it could work."
